Today I continue my quest in creating and posting one block a day of the fabulous That Town And Country Quilt by the lovely Susan Claire. This is day one hundred and fifty-four of that project.

This quilt block shows the end of a bright orange fence with some flowers next to it against a light blue salmon-patterned background. The flower stems are yellow stitching and the flower bulbs are heart-shaped light red two-holed buttons.

Here’s the end of “Julie’s yard”.

The little fence shows a nice definition and Julie has planted a new flower unique to That Town.

Related to Shirley Poppies they are Shirley Hearts. Available in a variety of colors, they are popping up all over town.

Developed by a local horticulturist, Marge Seedpod, Marge has a couple of Victorian style greenhouses in her back lot. She grows all sorts of exotic plants and has been working on developing this new variety for years.

The heart shape is apparently very difficult to convince flowers to grow into. It’s an incredible achievement for her to be able to introduce Shirley Hearts this year.

A very quiet tiny woman with large thick eyeglasses, she is more comfortable with plants than people.

The horticultural world has gone crazy for her and she finally granted an interview with a picture before putting up a wrought iron fence with a big gate and a prominent NO TRESPASSING sign.
