One of our new Block-Of-The-Months [BOM] is called Sisterhood.

Sisterhood is a beautiful quilt with 30 different blocks. The pattern designers decided to name each block after someone they knew. I decided it might be fun to pick that up and tell you about some historical people with the same name, as well as anyone I know with the same name.

Doris is the name of this block. I have only known one Doris in my life. She lived next door to my Grandmother here in Granby. They talked over the fence and had coffee nearly every day. She was a great friend to my Grandmother, and she missed her very much when she was no longer next door.

Doris was a Greek Sea Goddess. One of 3000 daughters of the Titan Oceanus, and means “gift.” Of course, the “Doris” we all know was America’s sweetheart Doris Day. She was a box office sensation in the 1950s and 1960s and passed away in 2019 at the age of 97.

The most interesting Doris I learned about was Doris Miller. Nicknamed “Dorie,” he was the first African American to be awarded the Navy Cross. He was killed in action during WWII. He was 24 years old when he attended the wounded and manned an anti-aircraft machine gun, without training, during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He was from Waco, Texas.
