One of our new Block-Of-The-Months [BOM] is called Sisterhood.

Sisterhood is a beautiful quilt with 30 different blocks. The pattern designers decided to name each block after someone they knew. I decided it might be fun to pick that up and tell you about some historical people with the same name, as well as anyone I know with the same name.

Bitsy is the name of this block.

Bitsy is a name we don’t hear often. It’s a nickname for Elizabeth. The Hebrew meaning is “pledged to God.” In 1962 it was considered a masculine name, and five boys were named Bitsy that year.

A semi-famous American actress is named Bitsie Tulloch. She was in the TV series GRIMM as Juliette Silverton/Eve. She also was Lois Lane in “Superman & Lois.”

The most common place we hear Bitsy is in the nursery rhyme “Itsy Bitsy Spider.” The origin of this little song is unknown, but it was published in 1910 more as a song for adults in Camp and Camino in Lower California with the words “blooming, bloody” instead of “itsy, bitsy.” The version we are all familiar with was later printed in 1948 by the California Folklore Society.
