Today I continue my quest in creating and posting one block a day of the fabulous That Town And Country Quilt by the lovely Susan-Claire Mayfield. This is day three hundred and fifty-eight of that project.

This quilt block shows a black and white dog against a light blue salmon-patterned background. The dog is made up of a cut out piece of black fabric, with a white stripe of fabric descending from her head and making up her muzzle. The dog is sitting and looking towards us. On each side of the head, with the stitching you can see two ears, and with a little pen you can see the two black eyes. — Click To Enlarge

Maggie was a very good dog.

She went with Scott to the field every day. She walked the ditches with him and waded in the water when she was hot.

We met her when her breeder brought her to the National Western Stock Show. We had made arrangements with him to pick her up there. When we got her, she was 9 weeks old and had the most enormous ears I ever saw.

She rode all the way home on my lap, and I thought she looked like she had ears like a bat.

During haying season, she ran next to whatever tractor was working that day. Her favorite was the baler. The reason for that was because she ate mice.

And as I drove the tractor and baler over the windrows of hay, the mice would run out to get away. She would scoop up as many as possible and just swallow them right down. She never got sick from it, and she’d keep it up all day.

I could hardly stand to watch her do it. ICK!

She slept at the top of the stairs as guardian over us, never asking to go into a bedroom.

She would also wedge herself behind the toilet when it thundered.

Yes, she was a very good dog.
