This block shows a round globular green helicopter with a first aid red cross on it. The propellers are yellow, and there are two large blades above the bubble. Below that is a deep red beanie cap like attachment that attaches the blades to the globe like body. The front of the ball has a large light yellow windshield, with a side door window next to it. This is all against a blue salmon-patterned background.

Today I continue my quest in creating and posting one block a day of the fabulous That Town And Country Quilt by the lovely Susan Claire. This is day one hundred and sixty-eight of that project.

I’m a little bit in love with this helicopter.

I think it’s adorable in a Dr. Seuss kind of way.

I decided this machine would be used for emergency flights for life evacuations, and fly-over tours. The man who owns the helicopter, “Seagull” Caldwell, is an entrepreneur and always looking for opportunities.

I named the pilot after Tom Caldwell. Tom flew ship 210 at the Grand Canyon for many years. Assisting the Park Service with search and rescue, he would drop Rangers into fire areas and on the river.

Additionally, he would evacuate critically injured people from the canyon to the medical facility in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Tom passed away in 2008. Those who knew him felt a tremendous loss.

R.I.P. Tom Caldwell.
