Today I continue my quest in creating and posting one block a day of the fabulous That Town And Country Quilt by the lovely Susan-Claire Mayfield. This is day one hundred and ninety-eight of that project.

This quilt block shows a dog house against a blue salmon-patterned background. The dog house has a very dark brown roof and is made of bright orange fabric. The inside is a gray fabric, but also inside is a spotted yellow dog. The dog is yellow with brown spots on it. There is also a dog bowl with a white bone in it. This is Gus.

Gus is the garden guard dog. He loves his job.

He lives behind Maggie’s house near her garden fence. He has a very comfy dog house and the best bones.

He’s been with Maggie a long time, and she really doesn’t need a guard dog, but it makes Gus feel important, so Maggie makes sure to let Gus know how vital he is to her operation. She has some lovely trees, and squirrels living in the trees tease Gus and throw nuts at him.

He, in turn, barks at them and runs them back up the tree. Rabbits live in burrows in the brush, and he keeps them at bay. Only occasionally, one will sneak into the garden for a special treat.

Usually, Maggie catches the offender and plugs the hole up to keep the bunny out, but she never lets on to Gus.

One of the littlest Farmhand’s favorite books is Charlie The Ranch Dog.

Gus reminded me a little of Charlie. I think they both are of unknown parentage.

They seem to view their value to their families much the same.
