Mountain Family Center is a wonderful resource for our community. They have a top notch thrift store and a very active much needed food bank. Our quilt guild donates lots of quilts, from baby quilts to full size bed quilts.

This quilt block shows a large just about square building. The main building material is a single large duotone polka dotted fabric (the dots being scattered and random). There are many smaller square windows outlined with an orange fabric, while inside they are a solid brown. They're each outlined by stitching. There is a light fixture above the middle door drawn in pen. The door is in the middle and is also outlined in an orange fabric. There are two signs, each detailed and colorful. Upstairs was a 3.2 beer joint called The Upstairs. The bowling alley closed in the late seventies. Sonny and Ruthie Samuelson were the owners. After that Cindy Samuelson opened a feed store there and I bought feed for many years from her.

When I was a girl it was the hardware store we went to for everything. Actually, it was under different ownership but it was the hardware store where we bought everything to build our house in the late ’80s.

This quilt block shows a clock repair shop. it's shaped like an old mantel clock but with a bigger base, which is the rest of the building. Theere is a big clock face pointing 12:20 at the top of the roof. The building is all brown, like a wooden mantel clock. There is a window on the left and in it in brown letters reads,

I think this kind of shop is a vanishing gem. There is a clock repair shop in Empire and stepping in there is like a step back in time. The closest thing to a “big ben” type clock in Granby is the clock outside United Business Bank.

This quilt block shows a square building with a sign on it and a wooden stairway up to a door. The building is white with black outlines showing the door and the windows. Inside the big window that's divided into three panes, there are the signs for UPS and FedEx penned in. The wooden staircase is brown and penned in to go up to the door. Above everything, hanging off the flat roof is a red sign. There's a black K backwards on top of a white K, and the words next to it are

They can print some really big stuff down there, like blueprints and banners. The same with shipping. They are our go-to for UPS and FedEx. I always smile when I go in there because Joseph, the owner, has humorous signs posted behind the checkout counter.

This quilt block shows an oddly shaped building. It's square but either side of it is a candy-striped barber pole with a gold ball on top. Along the top or roof is a white stripe that has scissors drawn on it and the word "Barber" in red. Underneath that is a grid window, really a patch of light cloth with squares drawn in brown in pen. It's an orange building otherwise, with a dark brown rounded door. This is all against a blue salmon-patterned background.

I only know what I’ve seen in movies about barber shops. A place where guys go and get a haircut and hang out. It always looks like they are having a good time and that the barbershop is the most important place to be. So maybe this shop is just like that.

This quilt block shows a large dark gray building that takes up most of the block. The roof is the darkest gray and is square and flat. Underneath that is a very big sign that's yellow. It reads,

There was an auto-dialer that would call our house if any sensor twitched when he wasn’t there. Then the phone would ring next to our bed and he would get up, get dressed and go to the plant to soothe whatever had ruffled its feathers.

I hope if someone needs something beyond their scope they refer that vacationer to Granby businesses. The General Store is just one of the amenities out there, along with a mini-bowling alley, arcade, workout area, and community center.

This quilt block shows a very orange church building. The steeple of the church building is tall and has a triangular top. Next to it is the long roof of the sanctuary. Both roofs are very dark brown, along with the door. Along the side the of the steeple written in white pen are the word,s "Cathedral" and a bright orange patch of fabric indicating a window. To the right of the rounded door are more bright orange rectangular windows and above them the words "Performance Hall" penned in white. This is all against a blue salmon-patterned background.

The windows were broken and the roof leaked. An arts group that wanted a venue for the performing arts saw potential in this grand old building. They did lots of fundraising and then they managed to get a patron that had very deep pockets. After many hours of volunteer work and some paid structural work, it was ready to shine.
