This block shows a patch of corner grass with the strong stitching in light green on its border. This patch of grass is two dark green fabrics, one a mound on top of the other in the bottom left corner. Standing on the mound is a duck, just about standing up flapping and stretching its wings. On the breast of the duck is a large white S written in with white pen. The duck is a several colors. The bill is a yellow fabric, the head a deep green fabric, the neck a white fabric, and the rest (beside the feet) is a brown fabric. The feet are orange fabric. These are all stitched together with a tight salt-and-pepper stitching to look very much like a duck standing up.

Block-A-Day 326 – Super Duck

Tina November 22, 2021Block-A-Day Leave a Comment

So here’s to you, Clark Kent of the duck world. Not sure if this fellow struts around the barnyard solving problems or touting his super-ness, but he’s sure a funny little delusional duck.

This quilt block shows a duck from the side facing left. The duck has a green head, a white collar, and a brown body. The duck bill is a small orange piece of fabric, the head a dark green piece of fabric, the body a small white piece, and the body is made up of three brown pieces (two for the wings). The feet are the same fabric as the bill. The wings are in mid-flap and are coming out of each side of the duck. Every piece of fabric is outlined by a black and white salt-and-pepper-like stitch. This is against a light blue salmon-patterned background.

Block-A-Day 325 – The Silver Appleyard Duck

Tina November 21, 2021Block-A-Day Leave a Comment

I’m going to call this duck a Silver Appleyard duck. They are a nice dual breed duck, producing tender meat and plentiful eggs. Here are 8 reasons to keep ducks:

This quilt block shows a horse in a stable. The stable is a yellow building with vertical slats delineated by red stitching. In the middle of the building is a brown gate split into an upper window and a lower door. The upper window is open, and out from the black fabric inside is an orange fabric in the shape of a horse. The horse has extra details drawn in with pen, like an eye and mane. The roof of the stable is a dark red and flat.

Block-A-Day 322 – Buck The Horse

Tina November 18, 2021Block-A-Day Leave a Comment

A gelding is a castrated male horse. Once after a vet had been to our place to castrate a couple of colts, I asked my father why the vet had been there. He replied, “Well, Sis, those young studs just had their minds changed for them.”

This quilt block shows a brown piece of fabric made to look like a big rectangular box on its side with demarcated boxes in pen in it. In each box is either yellow hay, or a light rust colored hen sitting on eggs looking at the viewer. This is against a blue splotch background fabric.

Block-A-Day 303 – The Nesting Boxes

Tina October 30, 2021Block-A-Day Leave a Comment

If you have a hundred chickens you’ll have ten nests, and that’s about the ratio you want and works out the best. When we started out we had open nests just like you see here in this block.

Against a blue background we can see a bale of hay, and on top of that bale is a chicken facing to the left. The chicken is a darker brown fabric with yellow stitching on it outlining its shape and forming a wing. At the head of the chicken is a beak and eye drawn in yellow, black, and red pen. The bale of hay is a square orange block with a special leaflike yellow stitching going around it and up th middle in sections.

Block-A-Day 301 – Curious Chickens

Tina October 28, 2021Block-A-Day Leave a Comment

Chickens are curious creatures and it is a common sight for him to be faced with not just one but several hens on top of the bales checking him out.

This quilt block shows a large piece of jagged fabric pointing up to indicate grass. It's green of course. Then in the center of the block is a dark brown pole stuck in the grass, and on that pole is a scarecrow. The scarecrow has blue jeans on with patches, and an orange shirt on with patches drawn in with pen. At the end of the legs and arms you can see yellow straw coming out. Above the shirt is a the lower part of a yellow ball and a big brown frumpy hat. On top of that hat drawn in black pen is a crow.

Block-A-Day 290 – The Scarecrow

Tina October 17, 2021Block-A-Day Leave a Comment

We have been doing our outside decorating here at the shop. Yesterday we put our scarecrow out front. We had a lot of fun building her and she’s a little scary. I love fall colors and I wear them all the time.

This quilt block shows a tall building with a large skylight. The roof is a large orange trapezoid. On the center of the roof is a yellow piece of fabric that is also in the same shape as the roof. There are threads that separate the panes of glass in the skylight. Below the large roof Is a dark yellow/gold main body. On that main body is large writing with a white outline that reads,

Block-a-Day 288 – That Town & Country Insurance Co

Tina October 15, 2021Block-A-Day Leave a Comment

Insurance is a very contentious subject locally in my town. With the fire last year our county has had so much loss of home and property that you can imagine we have had so many claims.

This quilt block is a corner block. There is a dark green grass patch in the bottom right of the square. On that grass patch are two jack-o-lanterns. The one in front is the traditional bright orange pumpkin with a spooky black face drawn on it with pen. There is also some thread or pen indicating a bit of a vine on it. Behind it is a tall squash that's more yellow. On it is a cuter spooky face with more rounded features. The top of this squash has some orange on it. This is all against a blue salmon-patterned background.

Block-A-Day 287 – Stingy Jack

Tina October 14, 2021Block-A-Day Leave a Comment

In Ireland, people started to carve turnips into scary faces to frighten away Jack. When the Irish immigrants came to the USA they started carving pumpkins. My favorite part? The roasted pumpkin seeds!

This quilt block shows a large just about square building. The main building material is a single large duotone polka dotted fabric (the dots being scattered and random). There are many smaller square windows outlined with an orange fabric, while inside they are a solid brown. They're each outlined by stitching. There is a light fixture above the middle door drawn in pen. The door is in the middle and is also outlined in an orange fabric. There are two signs, each detailed and colorful. On the left is a blue, black, and white sign with mountains on it and thew words,

Block-A-Day 282 – New-2-U And Never Summer Brewing

Upstairs was a 3.2 beer joint called The Upstairs. The bowling alley closed in the late seventies. Sonny and Ruthie Samuelson were the owners. After that Cindy Samuelson opened a feed store there and I bought feed for many years from her.

This quilt block shows an oddly shaped building. It's square but either side of it is a candy-striped barber pole with a gold ball on top. Along the top or roof is a white stripe that has scissors drawn on it and the word "Barber" in red. Underneath that is a grid window, really a patch of light cloth with squares drawn in brown in pen. It's an orange building otherwise, with a dark brown rounded door. This is all against a blue salmon-patterned background.

Block-A-Day 277 – The Barber Shop

Tina October 4, 2021Block-A-Day Leave a Comment

I only know what I’ve seen in movies about barber shops. A place where guys go and get a haircut and hang out. It always looks like they are having a good time and that the barbershop is the most important place to be. So maybe this shop is just like that.

I am so excited about this month’s project: the Smart Sofa Station. This project has several useful components, so we will be working on it throughout July. Make one for yourself and turn your sofa sewing space into a peaceful, organized haven, or make one as an amazing handmade gift. We will start with the base and work our way through each part together. The project cost is $25 for the pattern, plus an additional $20 to cover the interfacings used. You provide your fabrics. I think this is going to be a fun, practical project, and I can’t wait to see everyone’s versions come together.
