They had been friends for a long time and Marc’s naturally sunny disposition went a long way with Ray. He enjoyed Marc’s sense of humor and positive attitude.

This quilt block shows a barrel made from brown boards with a dense topiary coming out of it. The topiary has been fashioned into two separate layers, with the lower layer being much larger. In this topiary are two bird heads poking out and looking around, one in the lower bush, and one in the upper bush. There is a small gray-white bird below the large layer on the barrel and a similar bird (a Junco bird) on the top topiary perching. The topiary is made of a green fabric. This is all against a blue background.

Juncos are actually ground foragers scrounging insects and weed seeds. They will come to a feeder, but you need to let them know where to look for it by sprinkling a few seeds on the ground.

This quilt block shows a weeping willow tree. The trunk of the tree rests in the center of the bottom of the block and grows upward, tapering to the end point at the top. Then yellow and green stitching comes out of the top like a fountain and "sprays" downward. With each stitching line there are green leaves outlined by stitching to indicate the leaves of the tree. On the left leave vine closest to the trunk there is drawn a dark green caterpillar with yellow spots.

One day when I was walking by I saw the most hideous creature I had ever seen (I swear I just had an involuntary shiver). On the end of a branch, about a foot off the ground was a horned tomato worm.

This quilt block shows a leafless tree, made of brown fabric, against a blue background with a cloudy full moon behind it. The full moon appears to be made of a ring of fabric/stitching with a filled in body of yellow pen. To the left at the base of the tree is a black cat. The cat is outlined with white stitching and white pen on black fabric to resemble a cat sitting facing to the right.

In the meantime, she’s pretty happy with living with this tree. Lots of food scurrying about to feed and entertain her. There is a little girl on the street that comes over at least once a day to pet her and give her little treats. She brings a water bottle and pours it into a dish so Smudge has a drink.

This quilt block shows an outhouse against a blue salmon-patterned background. The outhouse is a dark brown with white stitching on it to indicate the door and slats. The roof is almost black and is a thin triangular shape. On the front of the door is a small two-holed yellow button for the door handle. At the top of the outhouse is a yellow crescent moon.

Block-A-Day 205 – The Garden Outhouse

Mandy built it out of wood reclaimed from an old barn and the door came from an actual outhouse. It has electricity and a yellow light shines through the half moon. Inside the outhouse is fitted not with a one holer but with a frost free hydrant.

This quilt block shows an apple tree. Much like the previous orange tree there are jagged shaped patches of grass at the bottom of the block. Then there is a trunk that is dark brown and lined by yellow stitching. At the top are many scattered leaves and large round reddish-orange apples. Each apple has a light green stems and leaves sticking out of the top. This is all against a blue salmon-patterned background.

I didn’t know that just because you plant a seed from a macintosh apple doesn’t mean you will get a macintosh apple tree. Every tree, like people, is different.

This quilt block shows a light brown slatted fence with curved (round) ends with day lily flowers behind it. The flowers are made out of light orange fabric for the bells/blooms and have little pen lines coming out of them for the pistels. There are also long green leaves too. The flowers and leaves (and fence) are outlined with a green stitching. This is all against a blue salmon-patterned background.

Block-A-Day 193 – Snow Fence Planters

This little square reminds me of the planters that were in front of my shop when I bought it 5 1/2 years ago. They were big square things that were waist high and about 24″ square.

This quilt block shows a large wooden door with a big metal ring as a door handle. The door is actually a gate, and is framed by a much darker brown outline of fabric. Next to the door are fence posts that decrease in height as they move towards the edge of the block. There is a green vine made of dark green fabric and green stitching that travels up the post and dangles over the top of the door. The gate or door itself is a light brown with multicolored threading indicating the slats of the wood. This is against a blue salmon-patterned background fabric.

Block-A-Day 189 – The Garden Gate

First, my mother in law has a garden gate that she’s had for a long time that is mounted in her garden area that has no fence to go with it. Never has. It’s whimsical and I love her the more for it.

This quilt block shows a sandbox. Each corner of the sandbox is capped with the end of a brown log. The upper left brown log has grass at the bottom. The sides of the sandbox are made up of a green fabric indicating the walls/boundary. Inside is a light brown fabric for sand, a truck made out of pen, a yellow toy shovel stuck in the sand, and an orange bucket. At the bottom of the square is jagged grass. This is all against a blue salmon-patterned background.

When the littlest was digging down he could get where we could only see the bottom half of him sticking out. A garden hose was always on hand with an on/off so they could have lakes, moats and floods.
