Block-A-Day category (365 articles)

My quest in creating and posting one block a day of the fabulous That Town And Country Quilt by the lovely Susan Claire. For a gallery index showing every block in the quilt in chronological order, click here.

This quilt block shows a blue salmon-patterned background with a bunch of very thing black vertical lines on it. The vertical lines have a larger base at the bottom of them. These are dead trees with little black skeletal like branches coming off them. There are dozens and dozens on this block making up a quite burnt forest.

Block-A-Day 295 – A Collective Breath

Then a miracle happened, the weather got colder, the wind changed and it snowed. My son refers to it as the day Hell Froze Over. Everyone took a deep breath and saw what was left.

This quilt block shows a mountain ridge horizon in a dark brown and black. On the horizon is a layer of bright white and orange in a gradient. These indicate giant flames of a fire. Above the flames is a giant brown patch of fabric indicating a plume of smoke. In the upper left is a blue section of sky.

Block-A-Day 294 – Apocalyptic Skyline

Two of the men that had been working with us also stayed. We had a water truck on site and had pulled a perimeter with a grader. Brandon Goober was with us that night. He wrote a song called “A Reason to Feel Safe”

This quilt block shows a white garage and a lot of smoke. The garage is a white piece of fabric, with black pen markings on it to give it its details. There is drawn in a yellow lamp at the top of the garage, and the shadows are drawn in on two garage doors. Everywhere else except the upper left of the block is covered with a black fabric and brown fabric indicating smoke. It's quite dramatic.

Block-A-Day 293 – The Fire, October 21st, 2020

Tina October 20, 2021Block-A-Day Leave a Comment

I debated about whether to include it in my quilt, but because it was such a big event I want the people that look at this quilt and read my stories to remember after I’m gone that we are all survivors.

This quilt block shows an apple tree with apples in it. The trunk is a dark brown and very wide, tapering up towards the foliage. In the dark green of the greenery are red pieces of fabric with bright green tops that are apples. The foliage is outlined by a bright green stitching. Propped up against the tree is a silver ladder, and nexto the silver ladder is a satchel that's tan with several apples of the same kind inside.

Block-A-Day 292 – The Apple Orchard

Apples and apple products (particularly apple cider vinegar) contain malic acid. This is believed to be helpful in treating fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and gallstones.

This quilt block is fairly simple. It's five plants of corn against a very light blue background. Each plant comes up from the bottom and stops at about the same height, midway up. Each plant has two leaves coming off of it except the left which has one. At the top of each piece of green fabric is a bulb that's covered in leaves. The texture of the corn plant is indicated by using parallel rows of yellow stitching up and down the corn.

Block-A-Day 291 – The Cornfields

Tina October 18, 2021Block-A-Day Leave a Comment

Other fun facts- Corn is wild grass and the ear is part of the flower. There are 800 kernels in 16 rows on the average ear. While yellow is the most common color, corn also comes in blackish, blueish gray, purple, green, red, and white.

This quilt block shows a large piece of jagged fabric pointing up to indicate grass. It's green of course. Then in the center of the block is a dark brown pole stuck in the grass, and on that pole is a scarecrow. The scarecrow has blue jeans on with patches, and an orange shirt on with patches drawn in with pen. At the end of the legs and arms you can see yellow straw coming out. Above the shirt is a the lower part of a yellow ball and a big brown frumpy hat. On top of that hat drawn in black pen is a crow.

Block-A-Day 290 – The Scarecrow

Tina October 17, 2021Block-A-Day Leave a Comment

We have been doing our outside decorating here at the shop. Yesterday we put our scarecrow out front. We had a lot of fun building her and she’s a little scary. I love fall colors and I wear them all the time.

This quilt block shows a tall blue building with an angled roof. Below the dark blue roof is a triangle window, in the same shape as the peak of the roof. Below the pink yellow window on the light blue building is a sign. The lettering is bold and has a gradient from bottom to top from yellow to even lighter blue. It says, "FAT CAT CAFE." Below that are two yellow windows, the left one having a red open sign. Finally on the ground level is a large window with a very stylish cat in a very stylish pose like out of a cartoon. It's striped and black and white. To the left of the cat logo window is a dark blue door the same shade as the roof. Both the door and the roof have yellow/gold stitching outlining them.

They make outstanding pie! I love their pie, and I’m really picky about pie. I could eat a whole banana cream or pumpkin from there. I really hope I am early enough in the morning to pick up a piece for breakfast.

This quilt block shows a tall building with a large skylight. The roof is a large orange trapezoid. On the center of the roof is a yellow piece of fabric that is also in the same shape as the roof. There are threads that separate the panes of glass in the skylight. Below the large roof Is a dark yellow/gold main body. On that main body is large writing with a white outline that reads,

Block-a-Day 288 – That Town & Country Insurance Co

Tina October 15, 2021Block-A-Day Leave a Comment

Insurance is a very contentious subject locally in my town. With the fire last year our county has had so much loss of home and property that you can imagine we have had so many claims.

This quilt block is a corner block. There is a dark green grass patch in the bottom right of the square. On that grass patch are two jack-o-lanterns. The one in front is the traditional bright orange pumpkin with a spooky black face drawn on it with pen. There is also some thread or pen indicating a bit of a vine on it. Behind it is a tall squash that's more yellow. On it is a cuter spooky face with more rounded features. The top of this squash has some orange on it. This is all against a blue salmon-patterned background.

Block-A-Day 287 – Stingy Jack

Tina October 14, 2021Block-A-Day Leave a Comment

In Ireland, people started to carve turnips into scary faces to frighten away Jack. When the Irish immigrants came to the USA they started carving pumpkins. My favorite part? The roasted pumpkin seeds!

This quilt block shows an aspen tree. The tree trunk is a cream colored fabric stick with darker lines drawn in to give it the texture of an aspen tree. The leaves are numerous little yellow and orange spots of fabric, all attached with invisible thread. They appear as if they are floating around the aspen tree trunk, and that they are turning for autumn.

Block-A-Day 286 – A Pink “Quakie”

Tina October 13, 2021Block-A-Day Leave a Comment

A dear friend was once away from Colorado in September, and was terribly homesick. He told me at one point that he would give his right arm to see and hear a pink “Quakie”. I know how he felt.

I am so excited about this month’s project: the Smart Sofa Station. This project has several useful components, so we will be working on it throughout July. Make one for yourself and turn your sofa sewing space into a peaceful, organized haven, or make one as an amazing handmade gift. We will start with the base and work our way through each part together. The project cost is $25 for the pattern, plus an additional $20 to cover the interfacings used. You provide your fabrics. I think this is going to be a fun, practical project, and I can’t wait to see everyone’s versions come together.

Class fee: $25 for the pattern, plus $20 for the interfacing package.
Please bring your own fabrics and your basic sewing supplies.
