This quilt block shows a blue salmon-patterned background with a bunch of very thing black vertical lines on it. The vertical lines have a larger base at the bottom of them. These are dead trees with little black skeletal like branches coming off them. There are dozens and dozens on this block making up a quite burnt forest.

Then a miracle happened, the weather got colder, the wind changed and it snowed. My son refers to it as the day Hell Froze Over. Everyone took a deep breath and saw what was left.

This quilt block shows a mountain ridge horizon in a dark brown and black. On the horizon is a layer of bright white and orange in a gradient. These indicate giant flames of a fire. Above the flames is a giant brown patch of fabric indicating a plume of smoke. In the upper left is a blue section of sky.

Two of the men that had been working with us also stayed. We had a water truck on site and had pulled a perimeter with a grader. Brandon Goober was with us that night. He wrote a song called “A Reason to Feel Safe”

This quilt block shows a white garage and a lot of smoke. The garage is a white piece of fabric, with black pen markings on it to give it its details. There is drawn in a yellow lamp at the top of the garage, and the shadows are drawn in on two garage doors. Everywhere else except the upper left of the block is covered with a black fabric and brown fabric indicating smoke. It's quite dramatic.

I debated about whether to include it in my quilt, but because it was such a big event I want the people that look at this quilt and read my stories to remember after I’m gone that we are all survivors.

This quilt block shows a square building with a tall broad roof in the shape of a trapezoid (we're looking at it from the front). On the orange roof is a flower design, with a two-holed start button on a yellow piece of fabric. Underneath the burnt orange roof are the stylized words,

This square was made with my dear friend Kathy in mind. She had the most amazing craft room you could imagine. Designed just for her with places for all her various crafts. My grandsons would go up and help her haul boxes up and down the stairs to her amazing room.

This quilt block shows a fire station garage with the door open against a deep blue salmon-patterned background. The station building itself is a bright red, the same shade as the fire engine which we can see from the front. The sign on top is yellow, and reads,

District #1 is responsible for 150 square miles in the Central Rocky Mountains. The volunteer department was established in 1939. Our district was formed in 1951. They handle about 160 calls a year They do wildfires, vehicle accidents and hazmat responses.
