Why SISU? Or what is SISU? It’s a Finnish word that doesn’t have a direct translation into English. It means perseverance, hardiness, bravery, resilience, and grit. I think it fits what they’re doing really well.

This quilt block shows a large just about square building. The main building material is a single large duotone polka dotted fabric (the dots being scattered and random). There are many smaller square windows outlined with an orange fabric, while inside they are a solid brown. They're each outlined by stitching. There is a light fixture above the middle door drawn in pen. The door is in the middle and is also outlined in an orange fabric. There are two signs, each detailed and colorful. Upstairs was a 3.2 beer joint called The Upstairs. The bowling alley closed in the late seventies. Sonny and Ruthie Samuelson were the owners. After that Cindy Samuelson opened a feed store there and I bought feed for many years from her.

This quilt block shows a variety of colors of hollyhocks. The stalks of the flowers are green stitches, while the bodies of the flowers are different colored fabrics: orange, maroon, and yellow. One flowe rbody has pen marks for the pistles, and on that flower there is drawn a beautiful hummingbird. The hummingbird is drawn with different color pens with its wings out.
