Yesterday in my shop we put Christmas fabrics into the "vault" until "Christmas in July". With limited floor space, we just can't have every bolt out at the same time. We still have a cutie-patootie kit of snowmen out for a few more days but in Christmas's place are NEW arrivals. We tried something else new too. Read more at the link in bio!

Today brings an end to a year of blocks.
.
It's sure been fun and enlightening for me. This last square has a gatehouse with a big keyhole in the door.
.
You can enter here and travel all around my Town and Country. This door has unlocked so much more for me. It has allowed me to recall memories I thought I had forgotten and share them.
.
This project has encouraged the artist and storyteller in me. In other words, this door unlocks me. My heart, my past, and my imagination.
.
I've enjoyed sharing my stories with you. I've enjoyed making each of these little pieces of art.
.
Thank you so much for taking this journey with me.
.
On to a new year and new endeavors. I will be posting and sharing as we look forward to a healthy, happy new year.

Lars and Ebba planted this tree soon after they arrived.⁠
.⁠
Now it's a mighty oak and can hold anyone who wants to swing on this tire. Grandchildren climb up and pile on and spin around. A single rider can go a long way up.⁠
.⁠
What you can't see in this picture is that this tree is on the bank of a swimming hole. If you stand on top of the tire you can swing out and jump in. I wish I could hear the laughter that has been generated by this old-fashioned style of fun.⁠
.⁠
There is an innertube or two that stays down there for floating in the pond and daydreaming. What a great spot on a hot day to cool off especially if you've been in the hayfield and are hot, sweaty, and itchy from the hay.⁠
.⁠
Add a cooler of beer or soda pop and you've got a heavenly spot in the country.⁠
.⁠

I love this grain storage building.⁠

It's made of concrete and then painted in very creative colors. It looks a little space age to me.⁠
.⁠
I would be so excited if I were driving along the highway sometime and looked over and saw this in a field. I'm putting it in Olsson's field.⁠
.⁠
With a family as large as theirs I'm sure someone creative made this. I imagine it on the edge of a field of sunflowers bordering corn.⁠

Wouldn't that be pretty?⁠

Ollie loves this tractor.⁠
.⁠
Now in his late sixties, he has dreamed of a tractor like this his whole life. He looks forward to every day he spends in it.⁠
.⁠
He was a little boy when he watched his dad plow the last field with a plow and mule. That's when they bought the first tractor.⁠
.⁠
Just a bare-bones tractor, no cab, no windshield, no power steering, and brakes you had to stand on to make it stop. It was the most beautiful thing they'd ever seen. First time he ever saw his dad, Lars, cry.⁠
.⁠
The work that first tractor could do!⁠
.⁠
Lars could plow fields in half the time. He increased his holdings 10 times over after that first tractor came.⁠
.⁠
There were, of course, other tractors. All stripped-down models that did the job and nothing fancy. Ollie would look at tractor calendars like other guys looked at swimsuit editions.⁠
.⁠
Finally, he could do it! He could buy that fancy tractor.⁠
.⁠
It has air conditioning and heat! Cup holders and shock absorbers on the ADJUSTABLE seat. Defrost and wipers for the windows and Stereo!⁠
.⁠
Ollie is trying to figure out how he can never have to leave his tractor. His wife of 40 years is jealous and suspects he's murmuring the tractor's name in his sleep.⁠
.⁠
Ollie has decided that if he were to die in that tractor seat he would die a happy man.⁠
.⁠

This funny house is on a parcel that the Olssons purchased adjacent to their farm.⁠
.⁠
After a bit of TLC, it was made livable. Stephen, the family blacksmith, and his partner Daniel live there now. They are clever and handy and it is now a quirky, charming home.⁠
.⁠
The blacksmith shop is on the original Olsson parcel. There Stephen handles all the ironwork and welding for the farm.⁠
.⁠
Additionally, he has a thriving business doing custom ironwork. He is booked out a year in advance.⁠
.⁠
Daniel, a software consultant, travels 3 days a week solving problems for small businesses.⁠
.⁠
Stephen and Daniel are terrific uncles to their extended family. Stephen has a booming laugh that is infectious and he laughs a lot. A big man with powerful arms from the forge he sports a handlebar mustache and long curly blond hair.⁠
.⁠
His sense of humor gives him twinkling blue eyes.⁠
.⁠
It's hard not to love "The Swede", as everyone affectionately calls him.⁠
.⁠

Lars and Ebba built this house to accommodate their large family.⁠
.⁠
With the intent that it would be home to Olssons for generations to come and so it is that three generations later that Martha's daughter Arin and her husband Richard Olsson-Lindgren live here.⁠
.⁠
Over the years as their family grew and the house grew so did the landholdings of the Olsson family. Arin and Richard still work the land and care for it as Arin's grandparents did.⁠
.⁠
They have seven children. Six strapping sons and one daughter, Lilly. The boys are a great help on the farm and for the most part, enjoy the work.⁠
.⁠
Fortunately, two of the boys have a desire to continue the family tradition of farming. Lilly shares her mother's love of fabrics and quilting. She works in the quilt studio with Arin, designing and quilting.⁠
.⁠
Arin has a longarm business and Lilly is a big help to her and can, at 14, use the long arm almost as well as her mother. The Olssons have always been pretty self-sufficient. Very little of what they eat doesn't come from the farm.⁠
.⁠
Sugar and coffee are two notable exceptions. Vegetables come from the garden, fruits from the orchard. Flour is milled from the wheat they grow. This way of life was paramount to Lars and Ebba.⁠
.⁠
They passed the conviction to their children who in turn have instilled it in their children. This is not an easy task in today's world, as everyone knows. It seems with few exceptions, to have "stuck" with ...⁠
.⁠

This is the first home Lars and Ebba Olsson built when they settled in the countryside.⁠
.⁠
They were young, eager, and full of dreams. They worked hard breaking the soil with a plow and a mule. They planted corn and wheat.⁠
.⁠
Their crops grew and so did their family. First was Mikael, then Anders and Johann.⁠
.⁠
Soon they were blessed with Freja followed by Olivia and Alva. Finally, Martha joined the family and they were complete. By this time they had built a much bigger house. You’ll see it tomorrow.⁠
.⁠
Ebba held onto her little cottage and lovingly cared for it. Planting flowers in the spring and making repairs.⁠
.⁠
Now one of her granddaughters, Arin has her quilt studio in it. She thinks she can feel Ebba and her mother Martha as she stitches.⁠
.⁠
When Martha comes to visit they both stitch in Ebba’s house and laugh until they cry.⁠
.⁠

Maggie was a very good dog.⁠
.⁠
She went with Scott to the field every day. She walked the ditches with him and waded in the water when she was hot.⁠
.⁠
We met her when her breeder brought her to the National Western stock show. We had made arrangements with him to pick her up there. When we got her she was 9 weeks old and had the biggest ears I ever saw.⁠
.⁠
She rode all the way home on my lap and I thought she looked like she had ears like a bat.⁠
.⁠
During haying season she ran next to whatever tractor was working that day. Her favorite was the baler. The reason for that was because she ate mice.⁠
.⁠
And as I drove the tractor and baler over the windrows of hay the mice would run out to get away. She would scoop up as many as possible and just swallow them right down. She never got sick from it and she'd keep it up all day.⁠
.⁠
I could hardly stand to watch her do it. ICK!⁠
.⁠
She slept at the top of the stairs as guardian over us, never asking to go into a bedroom.⁠
.⁠
She would also wedge herself behind the toilet when it thundered.⁠
.⁠
Yes, she was a very good dog.⁠
.⁠

A galvanized water trough is a staple on every ranch or farm.⁠
.⁠
This tank probably belongs next to the windmill we had a few blocks back.⁠
.⁠
Used for water for horses and cattle in a field, shorter tanks for sheep and goats.⁠
.⁠
In a pinch, a big low tank will make a duck or goose pond. I've used one as a brooder for chicks, just add a heat lamp and you're all set.⁠
.⁠
You could take a bath in one if you were too dirty for the house.⁠
.⁠
When a hole finally rusts in one and it won't hold water you can use it as a feed trough and put hay in it.⁠
.⁠
When you have a pig roast at your house you can ice the pig in it before you roast it and then wash it out well and fill it with ice, soda, water, and beer. A smaller tank will hold ice and a keg.⁠
.⁠
Yes sir, a galvanized tank is an essential, useful piece of equipment.⁠

Here are the hand tools Mom uses in her gardening.⁠

The thing on the left is a weed hook, then a pitchfork, a hand spade, a leaf rake, and hedge trimmers.⁠

Since she got her garden tractor she doesn't use the pitchfork much nor does she use the leaf rake. Dad bought her a leaf mulcher attachment last year. And of course, she has a rototiller-type attachment to handle turning the garden.⁠
.⁠
The hand spade and weed hook she puts in the little wagon attachment along with bedding plants in the springtime.⁠

She could not be more delighted with her arrangement.⁠

Little Blue Tractor is the garden tractor.⁠
.⁠
It's a fairly recent addition. In fact, Mom got it for her 50th birthday.⁠
.⁠
Best present ever.⁠
.⁠
She wheels around the lawn, mowing and thinks it's so fun her family has caught her doing it twice on the same day.⁠
.⁠
She has a little dump wagon she can haul manure, soil, and rocks in. She tills the garden with it and the garden has never been better. Mom's thrilled for the chance to use her little rig and uses it even when doesn't need to.⁠
.⁠
She'll start it up to run out to the barn or field to tell Dad that lunch is ready. They have cell phones but they aren't as much fun.⁠
.⁠
Every time Dad hears that tractor coming it brings a smile to his face. He's checking out new attachments for next year.⁠

Here is the equipment shed.⁠
.⁠
It's very helpful to have an equipment shelter. Before we had one we had to tie tarps on all of your equipment through the winter.⁠
.⁠
In this shed, we have a side-by-side, a tractor, a manure spreader, and a bale wagon. Don't know where their baler is but I'm sure it's in there somewhere.⁠
.⁠
Scott used to clean and grease all the stuff before it went into the shed.⁠
.⁠
Equipment is hard to come by so taking care of it is important.⁠
.⁠
